A flock of sparrows flew into the branches of the mango tree in the city park. It was almost sunset and soon it would be time to sleep. A young sparrow gazed wide-eyed at brightly lit buildings surrounding the park. Colourful paper lanterns and fairy lights twinkled in the windows and balconies. “I’ve never seen the city look so bright,” said the sparrow. “What’s going on?”
“It’s the festival of lights in a day or two,” explained his mother. “Isn’t it pretty?”
“Hmph. Wait till the racket starts,” grumbled another, older bird.
“It’s been quiet this year,” remarked the mother.
“So far,” said the older sparrow with a sceptical shrug.
“I am looking forward to all the mithai,” said another cheerfully. “I’m sure we’ll get lots of crumbs as always.”
“Now THAT sounds like a happy Diwali,” said the grumpy sparrow perking up.
“Ooh! I love mithai!” said the young sparrow excitedly. “Happy Diwali!” he chirruped to the others.
“Happy Diwali!” chorused the others in reply, and the evening was filled with their cheerful chatter.
